Seal Beach-based Clean Energy Fuels is buying Wyoming Northstar Inc. and its affiliates for $10.9 million as part of its efforts to expand the nation's natural-gas-fueling infrastructure.

Wyoming Northstar specializes in liquefied-natural-gas and liquefied-to-compressed-natural-gas fueling system technologies, and provides station design, construction, operations and maintenance.

Clean Energy, which fuels more than 19,900 vehicles at more than 200 stations across the U.S., will pay $7.4 million up front and the balance in yearly installments. The natural-gas-fueling provider also will pay retention bonuses of up to $4 million.

“Having Northstar, the premier LNG (liquefied-natural-gas) station provider, in our group will greatly enhance our ability to build out the growing natural-gas-fueling infrastructure in the United States,” said Andrew Littlefair, president and CEO of Clean Energy.

He said the company "envisions" a system that serves major goods movement and trucking corridors across the U.S. – and eventually, maybe even the world.

"On the international front," said Littlefair, "growing interest in LNG fueling in markets such as China, where we have a strong developing presence through our subsidiary, IMW Industries, may provide infrastructure opportunity as well.”
