ROMULUS, Mich. (WJBK) - Thomas Sawyer, a retired Michigan teacher and cancer survivor on his way to Florida, says he was left humiliated and covered in his own urine following a pat-down by Transportation Security Association (TSA) officers earlier this month at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

MSNBC's Harriet Baskas reports Sawyer, 61, of Lansing, Mich., is a bladder cancer survivor who now wears a urostomy bag, which collects his urine from a stoma, or opening in his stomach.

Sawyer says the security scanner at Metro Airport picked up the bag during a scan on Nov. 7 and he was chosen for a pat-down. He says he asked to be screened in a private room due to his medical situation.

"My heart started beating," said Sawyer. "I didn't know what to do. I felt kind of trapped."

During the screening, Sawyer's urostomy bag was broken, leaving him covered in urine. He says agents offered no apologies or assistance.

"I've got urine and two men I don't know," said Sawyer. "My underwear had been dropped to the floor and I'm standing in front of them with my underwear and had to ask them to pull them up."

Sawyer plans to file a formal complaint with the TSA.
